Pueblo Public Schools Focus on Innovation, Academic Excellence

Pueblo’s public schools prepare students for bright futures – in Pueblo and around the world.

Pueblo City Schools
A community-led strategic plan is ensuring that students of Pueblo City Schools not only meet Colorado and national standards, but international standards as well.

The program, funded by a $7.2 million Magnet Schools Assistance Program grant, created an international magnet school in Pueblo – one of only three such schools in the state.

The grant has also helped the school system revamp its teaching model to meet international standards. Innovative, state-of-the-art technologies are being incorporated into curricula, from kindergarten to high school.

At Fountain Elementary, for example, the Pre-K through third grade curriculum emphasizes academic, social, physical, emotional and cultural development in an effort to create community-oriented, lifelong learners.

Teachers are encouraged to be more nurturing and are required to attend ongoing professional development training. In fact, personal responsibility is central to the success of the magnet programs and is reflected in not only the high expectations placed on students, but also upon parents.

Students ultimately earn an internationally recognized diploma through a challenging two-year high school program. The end result is a polished group of learners whose academic success could add up to a bright future for Pueblo.

Pueblo School District 70
For the administrators of School District 70, education is about helping kids succeed – in the classroom and beyond.

To help accomplish this goal, the district has implemented a multipart program called 21st Century Tools for a 21st Century Education.

First, the program provides laptop computers for all high-school students. Each student is assigned a specific laptop to use throughout high school; beginning with the class of 2012, students will also have the option of purchasing their laptops when they graduate.

Second, the program brings interactivity to younger students, with the district installing Promethean whiteboards in every classroom from pre-K through middle school. Teachers can access the Internet directly from the boards, which come bundled with instructional software and electronic tools like rulers and protractors.

The 21st Century initiative also includes professional development for teachers, beginning with a new laptop for every teacher who completes a training course.
